The Bewcastle Cross, Bewcastle, Cumbria, 1958. Situated in a graveyard of an old church. The south face is seen here, with its vine-scroll decoration. The cross is an example of Anglo-Saxon sculpture and is dated to the mid 8th century. The shaft has lost its head, but still stands over 4m high. The inscription on it suggests that it is a monument to Alcfrith, son of Oswiu of Northumbria, who ruled 641-70, and his wife Cyneburh.
