University College Hospital, Gower Street, Camden, London. The University College Hospital is linked to the University of London and was constructed in 1834. Until this date medical degrees could only be obtained by study at Oxford or Cambridge and most practioners had no degree. In 1846 the first major operation using ether as an anaesthetic was performed here.
