West Gateway leading to the Church of St Bartholomew the Great, West Smithfield, London, 1915. The West Gateway, timbered beneath its brick facade, is visible beyond the lamp post, and leads to the church, which is part of a priory founded in 1123. Smithfield was a place of public excution for over 400 years, and excavations outside the west doorway have uncovered the remains of people who were burned to death.
