Rear alley of Hammond Street, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, 1960. A typical early 19th-century alley, laid out as part of the planned development of Tunstall. These alleys ran between rows of houses known as 'back-to-backs', as their backyards opened onto the alley on each side.
