A detail of the table and tapestry in the hall of the Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. These furnishings are a reconstruction, indicating how the hall might have looked. The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
