Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire, 1987. From humble beginnings in 1132, Rievaulx Abbey became one of the foremost Cistercian monasteries in medieval Britain. Much of the surviving buildings date from the 13th century. The domestic quarters are seen here from the roofless nave of the monastic church.
