The Prospect of Whitby, 57 Wapping Wall, Shadwell, London, c1945-c1965. Seen here from the River Thames, customers sit on a balcony over the beach at low tide. One of the oldest riverside public houses in London, the Prospect of Whitby first opened in 1520. It was later named after a ship moored outside in the late 18th century. It originally had a reputation as a haunt of thieves and smugglers; Pepys and Dickens were customers, as were painters such as Turner. .
