The aqueduct and viaduct at Marple, Greater Manchester. Railway viaduct seen from the aqueduct which carries the Peak Forest Canal above the River Goyt; the Lancashire landscape can be seen beyond. The aqueduct, which comes at the foot of a flight of locks, was built by Benjamin Outram in 1801-8. Marple thrived as a textile town in a narrow valley at the foot of the Pennines, and relied on the railways and canals to transport its products.
