Temple of the Four Winds, Castle Howard, North Yorkshire. The Temple of the Four Winds is one of many garden follies, and dates from 1724-26. The drive to the temple is lined with statuary. Both Castle Howard and the Temple of the Four Winds were built in the early 18th century for the Earl of Carlisle to designs by Vanbrugh. The house is on a grand scale, and its grounds were designed to match.
