The parterre, Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire, 1998. Kirby Hall was one of the finest houses built in the 17th century. Begun in 1570 by Sir Humphrey Stafford, it was completed by Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor to Elizabeth I. The west garden, with its brick wall and blind gateway, has been laid out as a parterre of the 1690s.
