Roman gateway through Hadrian's Wall at Milecastle 37, Northumberland, 1994. Gateways such as this one, the north gateway of Milecastle 37, controlled access through Hadrian's Wall. A milecastle was built every mile along the Wall, and this one is just west of Housesteads Fort.
