Pendennis Castle, Cornwall, at night, 1997. The original part of the castle, seen here at night, consisted of the keep which provided a series of gun platforms to protect Falmouth harbour and lodging for the governor. Pendennis Castle was begun in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's defence of the south coast. A large enclosing fortress was added in Elizabeth I's reign.
