St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, Kent. The Abbey church was rebuilt c1090, though the north wall of the nave, seen here, was partly rebuilt in brick in 1539. Canterbury Cathedral can be seen in the distance. A monastery was founded on this site just outside Canterbury in 598 by St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory to convert the English. The Normans replaced the Saxon monastic buildings.
