Gunport at Deal Castle, Kent, 1997. This gunport, now glazed, is one of many which defended the Castle on all sides. A vent above was designed to carry away the smoke. Deal Castle was completed in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's scheme to defend the South Coast against invasion, and stands only a few yards back from the beach.
