Dartmouth Castle, Devon, 1994. The town of Dartmouth can be seen on the other side of the estuary. Begun in the late 14th century, the castle stands on a rocky promontory which juts out into the Dart estuary. Built to protect the merchants of Dartmouth, it was one of the earliest castles designed with artillery in mind.
