Gatehouse to Calshot Castle, Hampshire, 1995. The gate is approached across the moat. It was protected by a portcullis, with a pair of gun loops to either side of the plaque (which is now blank). The gatehouse was enlarged in the 1770s to provide better accommodation for the governor. Calshot Castle was built in 1539-40 as an artillery fort to guard the entrance to Southampton Water against the threat of invasion.
