Barrack room at Calshot Castle, Hampshire, 1995. In the 19th century a typical gunner's kit laid out for inspection in the barrack room on the first floor of the keep may have looked like this. Calshot Castle was built in 1539-40 as an artillery fort to guard the entrance to Southampton Water. It continued as a military building until World War II.
