Dartmouth Castle, Devon, 1999. The square tower and southern gun platform are seen here. The castle, begun in the late 14th century, stands on a rocky promontory which juts out into the Dart estuary. Built to protect the merchants of Dartmouth, it was one of the earliest castles designed for artillery.
