Lighthouse at Whitehaven, Cumbria, 1999. The West Pier lighthouse, seen here, was built following the extension of the harbour in the early 19th century. During the 17th and 18th centuries Whitehaven was turned into one of the foremost ports in England, particularly transporting coal.
