The Mermaid Misericord, Ripon Cathedral, Ripon, North Yorkshire, c1965-c1969. Misericords are hinged seats found in the choir stalls of monastic and collegiate churches, designed to offer the cleric 'merciful' support during long periods of standing. They were often enlivened with figurative carving, of which the Mermaid Misericord is an example.
