Barges at Brigg, Humberside, 1901. The Ancholme River was first canalised in 1635, connecting several small waterways via Brigg to the Humber at South Ferriby, but it was from 1767 that the Ancholme Navigation flourished. Agricultural products and coal were the main cargoes carried on this route.
