Checking Shells, Cunard Shell Works, Birkenhead, Merseyside, 1917. These women are checking shells to ensure that they meet the standards set; an irregular shell may explode in the barrel of the gun. Rigorous controls were applied to the manufacturing processes at this site, which still managed to produce nearly 5,000 shells a week.
