Tower of Refuge, Conister Rock, Isle of Man, 1890-1910. Despite its appearance, the Tower of Refuge on St Mary's Isle near Douglas was not a defensive or military structure but rather a purpose-built shelter for crew members shipwrecked on the reef. It was built in 1832 by John Welch.
