Cliftonville, Margate, Kent, 1890-1910. A view of The Sands with the High Cliffe Hotel to the right of the photograph. A number of bathing machines can be seen on the beach. This contraption allowed swimmers to enter the water in relative privacy, and was invented in Margate in 1753.
