Waring & Gillow factory, Hammersmith, London, 1914-1918. Waring and Gillow were makers of fine furniture, but during the First World War their factory and its employees was adapted to making the wooden frames for aircraft. Even in wartime women tended to be given routine jobs, while men performed more skilled tasks.
