Sancai pottery mortar with floral pattern, Five Dynasties period, China, 10th century. A shallow stoneware bowl from Hunyuan kiln, Shanxi province, the interior of which is combed all over and incised with a stylised five-petalled flower below a combed border and covered with sancai glazes including a pale blue. This type of mortar was used to reduce the 'cakes' of tea which were produced at this time.
