White glazed jar with locking device, Northern Song dynasty, China, 10th-11th century. The body of this bulbous jar and cover is carved with overlapping bands of lotus petals that extend upwards from the base and from the round mouth down to the shoulder. The cover has a pointed projection on one side and a vertical flange with a circular hole on the other so that the cover can be locked in place. The whole piece is covered with greenish white glaze of Ding type. Spur marks round the mouth and cover show that they were fired together.
