Polychrome dish with moulded decoration, Liao dynasty, China, late 11th century. A circular dish with moulded floral decoration of peonies. The interior is covered with polychrome decoration of typical green and golden-brown lead fluxed glaze splashes on a yellowish-white ground; the outer edge golden brown. There is an inner green glazed band round an impressed central swirling flower; the exterior is covered with plain golden-brown glaze extending half way to the unglazed foot; there are several spur marks on the green band in the interior. The unglazed base shows a light brick red colour typical of some Liao kilns. During the Liao dynasty the lead-fluxed sancai palette of the Tang dynasty was revived and this is a fine example.
