Cizhou-type sgraffito carved brown glazed meiping vase, Jin dynasty, China, late 12th-13th century. A tall Cizhou-type meiping vase with a narrow base and conical mouth. The body is carved in sgraffito technique with three horizontal bands - the top broad, horizontal band has three large lotus blooms and foliage framed by carved double lines above and below the band. Next, a narrow band of incised classic scroll similarly bordered, the remaining broad band of erect overlapping lotus petals between double incised borders. The whole vase is covered with a thick dark brown glaze carved through the white slip to the putty-coloured body, which is scraped to form the background.
