Covered box decorated in underglaze blue and red with pomegranates and lychees, early Kangxi period, Qing dynasty, China, 1662-1677. A covered box with shallow footrim, the cover of which is decorated within a double-ringed circle with lotus sprays surrounded by pomegranates and lychees. The body is decorated with bamboo, rose and chrysanthemum sprays. All the branches and leaves are depicted in underglaze blue while the flowers and fruit are in underglaze red. Pomegranates with their many seeds were are used as a motif to symbolise many offspring/abundance.
