Bronze incense burner, Western Han dynasty, China, 2nd-1st century BC. This incense burner consists of a bowl on a tall stem, with a pronounced bulge at the centre of the stem. There are also small steps on the ring foot. The bowl is hemispherical and has a raised band below the lip. A vertical flange on the lid fits over the rim of the bowl. Within the central part of the lid is an openwork scroll, in which a bear can be discerned. The bronze is a dark brownish-green with some areas of brighter corrosion.
