Gold openwork escutcheon plaque with granulation, Northern Wei dynasty, China, 5th-6th century. A small openwork plaque in gold with granular work, shaped as an inverted escutcheon with openwork representation of a stylised cicada or bee, the design of which is accentuated by granular lines. The eyes and edges were probably originally inlaid with turquoise.
