Carved black lacquer covered box on red ground, Ming dynasty, lChina, late 15th-early 16th century. A circular lacquer box and cover with carved decoration of a man (of west Asiatic type) dancing with a qilin. The man is wearing a wide-brimmed pointed cap and a robe with long sleeves. The base is carved with a design of flowering camellia.
