Steatite ewer and cover with cabbage-like foliage in low relief, Late Tang dynasty, China, 9th century. A steatite ewer and cover of greenish-grey coloured mica-flecked talc stone. The body is decorated with three large and one small groups of cabbage-like leaves in low relief with many fine line incisions similar to the decorations found on late Tang to early Northern Song parcel-gilt silver. The cover has a circular somewhat pyramid-like knob which is also decorated in relief with two similar floral sprays with many fine lined incisions.
