Jade praying mantis, Southern Song dynasty, China, 1127-1279. A praying mantis in jade with a slightly greenish tinge and brown suffusions. Its head is raised, its feelers and legs are at rest and its eyes and beak are prominent. The praying mantis was a symbol of bravery.
