White jade qilin pendant, Southern Song dynasty, China, 1127-1279. A well carved jade two horned qilin. The jade is of lychee flesh colour with some brown flecking. The qiling is seated on its haunches, its nose in the air, its tail with fine incised lines curled up by the left rear leg. A long beard is finely incised all along the jaw ending in two long curling side burns. The neck has finely incised hair; the base is plain. The eyes are incised with two rings. The body is pierced for suspension.
