Jade dragon-headed tortoise, Yuan dynasty-early Ming dynasty, China, 1279-1499. A dragon-headed tortoise with bearded head, two barbed horns and swept up mane. Its snout is upturned and its mouth shows a free standing tongue. The tail is three pronged and upturned, the carapace with knobbles on the top section and the sides smooth with two planes. Its feet, neck and tail are scaled. The jade is of white colour with orange-brown skin down one side.
