Jian temmoku tea bowl, Southern Song, China, 13th century. A typical Jian yao tea bowl from Fujian province with finger groove near the rim. The unglazed base is of typical dark brown biscuit. The inside and outside are both glazed with an unusual even brown glaze with small black flecks overall. The base is unusually incised with single character 'Tian'.
