Painted pottery chess player, Western Han dynasty, China, 206 BC-8 AD. Moulded pottery figure in the squatting pose wearing a long draped robe and hair in a top knot. The whole piece is painted with unfired white pigment. The facial features are shown in reserve with a mournful expression indicating he is probably losing.
