Box with crescent moon and prunus spray, Yuan dynasty, China, 14th century. A small round covered box with cream coloured glaze. The domed cover is decorated with a flowering prunus spray and crescent moon left unglazed in reserve burnt orange in the firing from the iron oxide in the clay. The body is similar to that found on the earliest wares from Dehua (which do not however have the iron oxide in the clay which has given the orange colour seen here) but the pattern and technique employed here and the iron oxide staining make it more likely that the piece should be assigned to the kilns at Jizhou.
