Gilt bronze Buddha, China, 10th century. A small gilt bronze hollow cast figure of Buddha seated on a lotus throne in padmasana position. The hands are held in front of the chest in uttarabodhi mudra. The figure is wearing loose robes with full sleeves which fall in folds around the body. The face has a serene expression and the hair is delineated by an incised grid pattern. The figure is raised on an octagonal base, there are extensive traces of gilding on the olive-brown patina. There is also a small bracket on the figure's back and a hole in the back of the throne (possibly to receive a mandola now missing).
