Lacquer stem cup with Buddhist emblems and butterflies, Ming dynasty, China, 17th century. A small metal lined lacquer stem cup with slightly flaring sides. The solid stem has a flaring foot and double ridge around the middle. The exterior is decorated with Buddhist and other emblems and butterflies in gold on a gold speckled ground under a coppery coloured varnish. The base is of black lacquer.
