Mandarin's (woman's) rank badge, Qing dynasty, China, c1898-1900. A square mandarin's rank badge with silver pheasant indicative of a fifth grade civil servant. The bird has its wings outstretched and faces towards a red sun in the top right hand corner. The background is composed of blue and white lozenge-shaped patterns and the Eight Buddhist Treasures including the endless knot. The border is decorated with alternating designs of bats and stylised longevity (shou) characters.
