Jade waterpot made from a Han sword pommel, Ming dynasty, China, 1368-1644. A greenish jade with extensive brown areas waterpot carved with incised kui dragons and classic scroll decoration out of a typical Han dynasty sword pommel. This pommel would originally have had raised rice pattern on its top (what is now the base of the waterpot), of which some traces remain. Three of the knobs which formed the rice pattern have been used to fill the three holes round the mouth of the waterpot which would have served to affix the pommel to the top of the sword.
