1-237-525 - The London Archives (City of London)/Heritage Images

Upper panel shows the City of London from Southwark before the Great Fire of London in 1666; middle panel shows the same view after the Great Fire. Lower panel consists of Wren's plan for rebuilding London. A main avenue runs from Aldgate to Fleet Street, passing through a geat circus in which stands the Royal Exchange. A second great avenue runs from the Tower to converge with the first at St Pauls Cathedral. There is a wide Thames quay. There is no evidence that the scheme was ever considered as a practical basis for rebuilding.
