'Early morning in the wilderness of Shur', 1860. Scene set at the 'Well of Moses' on the western shore of the Red Sea. A family group are sitting outside a tent on the far left, a group of men are sitting in the centre of the picture, some on the back of camels. All are focusing on a man with an outstretched arm on the far right. This picture depicts an event from the Old Testament. Moses led the people of Israel from the Red Sea and into the Shur desert, where they travelled for three days without water. The story can be found in the book of Exodus.
