'Akalees', (Indian warriors), 1844. Bearded Indian men in traditional costume with curl-toed shoes, rings round their necks and elaborate headdresses. Two of the men hold decorated rifles. The Akalees were a group of fierce Indian soldiers, their name derived from the god Akal.
