'Political Chess', 1887. Charles Parnell and WH Smith at the chess board; Smith, on the right, says Check and Parnell, his hand to his forehand, scans the pieces and says Confound him. It will soon be 'Mate', I fear; Parnell was unpopular at the time owing to a forged letter in the Times which accused him of approving the Phoenix Park murders in Dublin.
