Palace of Darius, Persepolis, Iran. Persepolis was built as Persia's new capital city during the reign of Darius I (522-485 BC), first king of the Achaemenid dynasty, and his son Xerxes I (485-465 BC). Although the palace that bears his name was begun by Darius it is thought that he did not live to see it completed.
