Artisans' city, Susa, Iran. An ancient city dating back to at least the 4th millenium BC, Susa became the centre of the Elamite civilization which flourished from 2700 BC. Susa was sacked by the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal in 646 BC, and the city later became the capital of one of the satrapies (provinces) of the Persian Achaemenid empire.
